Chicken keeping workshop

Dreaming of fresh eggs? Looking for some friendly new additions to the backyard? Want to turn your scraps into garden fertilizer? You need chooks! Or maybe ducks...
Join us for a fun morning of hands on chicken keeping where you will have a chance to meet many different breeds of poultry, inspect several types of coops and ask lots of questions.
When : Sunday 28 August 2022, 10am-1pm
Where: Tatum Hills Farm, Bywong
Who: this workshop is aimed at adults with no or little poultry keeping experience
What to bring: lots of question and season appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes or gumboots
Cost: $85 per person (includes workshop notes and a tour of our farm to meet our other animals, for interested participants)
Bookings are through CIT
The workshop will cover:
* Origin of chickens
* What's inside a chicken ... no chickens will be harmed as part of this workshop!
* Chicken politics - including introducing new chickens to an existing group
* Breeds
* Roosters
* Dealing with broodies
* Choosing or building a coop, including low cost options
* Building a run
* Free ranging your flock
* Feeding and watering your chooks
* Dealing with vermin
* Dealing with parasites
* Chicken illnesses and the chicken first aid kit
* Poultry resources - online communities and knowledgeable vets.
PLUS
* an overview of keeping ducks or guinea pigs as an alternative way of turning scraps into fertilizer.
