25/4/2013 0 Comments Just another day...The rain has been missing us for a few weeks now and now the grass is not great fodder. We want to give some of our paddocks a rest, so we tried to put our stud Enrique in with the other boys today. Previous attempts to do this had not gone very well, but lately we have been feeding Enrique next to the other boys (separated by a fence) and he seems to be accepting them, so we thought we'd give it another go. The operation was "oiled" by copious amounts of hay and we were all ready to step in and separate them... Instead they just went past each other like total gentlemen, with only a quick snort exchange and swapped paddocks. Later Enrique returned to his dwelling and found the boys there... Silly Bakr, our junior stud, tried to mount Enrique... NOT a good move! Enrique put him in his place and all seemed good now... We'll see in the morning!
All the chooks and Jamie came to keep them company and all seems well. Happy day on the farm!

14/4/2013 1 Comment Leaves town to escape jailThe last one of the three boys we hatched in October finally found a good home to go to, in nearby Yass. not a moment too soon as we are cruelty building a jail for our boys (don't worry it's a spacious enclosure, really!) where we'll put the roosters to give our girls a break after a busy Summer of love, which resulted in some feather loss for our First Lady Alisha and the second wife Amy.
Our young boy was getting a bit too enthusiastic with them so he'll be very happy in his new home where he'll not only have a lovely human family with lots of children and lots of space but he'll look after 22... Yes, TWENTY TWO girls all of his ownf!
Even the llamas came to say goodbye, but the one who'll probably miss him the most is his sister Cleopatra. Now she'll have to start being nice to the others and make some friends...
7/4/2013 0 Comments Meet Luna and JadeOur young peacock Jamie had been alone since Christmas, when a fox took his girl, Aurelia. Very sad. Finally, after much searching we recently found two more girls, so yesterday I went to pick them up. They are about 4 months old so still only babies, same age as Jamie was when we got him last year. Was it love at first sight? Not sure but Jamie was certainly pleased to see some of his kind again! Little Luna (Italian for moon, as she has some white on her flight feathers) and Jade also seem reassured by his presence and keep calling out to him. I suspect if I let them out they might just follow him around everywhere, but I'd rather not risk it, so they'll have to be locked up for a few weeks until they get to know us and the place a bit better. In the meantime, Jamie is spending a lot of time near them and the chickens are giving them a good check out too. Luna was raised by a chicken hen, so I hope that having chooks around will make her feel a bit more at home.
